French may be the language of love, but that's not what makes it a "Romance language". Here's what does:

The Romance languages (e.g. Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Romanian) all began as dialects of Latin. Latin was the language of the Roman Empire (hence, Romance).

You'll notice that the Romance languages have a lot of similar words. This is because they share a common origin: Latin.
